Aces Dropping Like Flies in 2025
This season is abruptly turning into a horror movie for many major league franchises, but only for their pitching staff. Starters, closers, and breakout arms are dropping like fly balls right now. We're not talking just relievers, we're talking the face of many franchises and players that are supposed to be carrying their team through October. Heres a look at who's out, who's stepping up for their teams this season, and what this will mean for some of the most hyped teams in baseball.
------------------------------
Gerrit Cole (New York Yankees):
Gerrit Cole, the Yankees ace and 2023 American League Cy Young winner, was expected to lead the Yankees pitching rotation in 2025. However, after undergoing Tommy John surgery in March this year, he will not be in the rotation at all. Cole had a spring training outing allowing six runs in 2 2/3 innings and afterwards reported elbow discomfort. It was then confirmed that he would have to undergo Tommy John surgery and is out for the 2025 season. The recovery time for Tommy John surgery ranges from 12 to 18 months, which places his 2026 season in question as well. However, Cole says that his recovery is going well and he spends six days out of the week working out at Yankee Stadium. Cole is already going through mental exercises each day before bed, pitching to imaginary batters, and he says that he hasn't given up a run yet. The Yankees are now having to focus on developing their young pitchers, as well as utilizing their veterans such as Max Fried and Carlos Rodon. Clearly the Yankees have been able to adapt well and have not had a problem winning games this season despite this setback.
Ronel Blanco (Houston Astros):
Ronel Blanco is also out for the 2025 season with an elbow injury. He was set to be a key contributor for the Astros pitching rotation this year after his breakout season in 2024. However, following his outing against the Texas Rangers on May 17th, Blanco reported that he had soreness in his elbow and was placed on the 15-day IL on May 20th. When he was evaluated further, it was determined that he will need to undergo Tommy John surgery in early June. Blanco's injury is simply adding to the list for the Astros after they lost Hayden Wesneski in early May to Tommy John surgery as well. The Astros have also lost Spencer Arrighetti, Luis Garcia, and Cristian Javier, which leaves them with few options. They are now having to rely on their remaining pitchers to step up. Lance McCullers Jr. has recently returned and shown a promising performance. He had a six inning outing against the A's with 12 strikeouts which should provide a much needed boost to their pitching rotation. The Astros may also have to look to their minor league system for potential reinforcements or explore other trade options.
Jackson Jobe (Detroit Tigers):
The Tigers have placed their rookie, Jackson Jobe, on the 15-day IL list due to a Grade 1 flexor strain in his right elbow. This decision was made after Jobe experienced a drop in velocity in his outing against the San Fransisco Giants when he allowed three runs on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings. Jobe reported feeling discomfort after the outing, which prompted staff to take caution. Jobe is not the only pitcher the Tigers have lost this season, Alex Cobb was also placed on the 60-day IL earlier in May due to hip inflammation. The Tigers are now utlizing their right-handed reliever Dylan Smith from Triple-A, since he has been excelling in the minor league with a 37% strikeout rate and no homeruns in 20 innings. Before Jobe's injury, he had made 10 starts for the Tigers as a rookie, with a 4-1 record and a 4.22 ERA. Although Jobe's injury is only a minor setback compared to others, the Tigers will have to manipulate their rotation. However, this has not been a huge problem for the Tigers since they still have their ace, Tarik Skubal.
Kyle Bradish (Baltimore Orioles)
It's no secret that the Orioles have been struggling this year. After a good run in 2024, the O's have not been able to pull things together this season. Kyle Bradish's injury isn't new, but it is becoming a huge problem for the Orioles. Bradish underwent Tommy John surgery in June of 2024 and is expected to be back sometime in the second half of the season. The Orioles need him now more than ever. Bradish experienced discomfort following spring training in 2024, but waited until he absolutely needed the surgery to go through with it. Still, this year Bradish says that he is glad he waited, because he did not want to have doubts about doing the surgery until he knew it was the only option. The Orioles are closely monitoring his progress, and are hopeful for his return after the All-Star break. Bradish's potential return could provide a significant boost to the Orioles pitching rotation, offering an arm to complement their other emerging talents. They have stated that they are "cautiously optimistic about Bradish's recovery and is preparing for his potential return to the mound".
Other Notable Injuries:
- Hayden Wesneski - Houston Astros: Underwent Tommy John Surgery in May.
- Luis Garcia - Houston Astros: Recovering from previous Tommy John surgery.
- Spencer Arrighetti - Houston Astros: Recovering from a broken finger.
- Joe Musgrove - San Diego Padres: On the 60-day IL with an elbow injury.
- Johan Oviedo - Pittsburgh Pirates: Placed on the 60-day IL with an elbow issue.
------------------------------
We are not even at the All-Star break yet, and rotations are already thinning out fast, and the teams that stash away their pitching depth like the Los Angeles Dodgers, are going to prevail. The trade market for good pitching arms is about to explode and we can definitely expect some minor league pitchers making their debut soon. Are pitching injuries the new normal? Maybe, but it's less about the reasons behind the injuries, and more about how teams are able to survive it- because October baseball does not care how many players you lost in May, you just need someone to throw the ball.
